Changing Perspectives: Wester Hailes Film and Moving Image Festival, is a community-wide event showcasing archival, community and artist film and moving image work. Taking place across October half term it will include multiple screening events, workshops and an outdoor projection trail at Westside plaza.

Interested in learning how to make your own short film? During this course, you will learn, and be trained in the key aspects of film making from camera and sound to screenwriting, directing and editing. You will be using state of the art film equipment, working towards the overall outcome of developing, filming and editing your very own short film.

Revolutionary Optimists with SCOREscotland

Description copy: SCOREscotland’s Green Futures project brings you a unique screening event of Revolutionary Optimists, provided by Take One Action. Filmed over the course of three and a half years, The Revolutionary Optimists follows Amlan and three of the children he works with on an intimate journey through adolescence, as they fight for the better future he encourages them to imagine is deservedly theirs.
Can our young people be inspired by the child activists in this film aiming to bring about desperately needed change in their own community?

Expecting Something: ‘This is no ordinary playgroup’

Every week a group of young parents and their little ones age 0-2 meet at WHALE Arts to have fun and be creative together. Art, music, dancing for everyone – Expecting Something is no ordinary playgroup. Over the past few weeks the group have worked with artist Becky Manson creating a short film to celebrate Expecting Something with the wider community. They’re delighted to share their work with you as part of Wester Hailes’ Changing Perspectives Film Festival.

Wester Hailes Kids on Film

Description copy: Join WHALE Arts and Wester Hailes Youth Agency for a one off screening and workshop event celebrating our local kids through film. Including screenings of films made by WHALE’s smARTies group and a vlogging film made by Wester Hailes Youth Agency alongside an exciting Introduction to animation workshop with the Zoom Club. Think, make, create and disrupt using digital technology alongside more traditional hands-on making.

Dads Rock Screening

Odeon Luxe Edinburgh West
Join us at Odeon Luxe Edinburgh West to celebrate the achievements of the young film makers from Wester Hailes Education Centre. This event will present a trio of films created in 2018 through partnerships with WHALE Arts and Screen Education Edinburgh, including their debut film ‘Changing Perspectives’ with an orchestral score by Tinderbox Youth Orchestra, the premiere screening of ‘Demon Hunters’ and their first community commission, a short documentary on Prospect Community Housing.

Over the Hedge with ELF Library Film Club

Wester Hailes Library
The special edition of the ELF Library Film Club at Wester Hailes Library will include a preview screening of ‘Master of Time’, a short film made by young people from the library this summer in partnership with WHALE Arts. Following this short film the library will screen Over the Hedge. In this animated comedy from the makers of Shrek, a group of forest animals awake after winter hibernation to discover that a huge hedge has been planted in the middle of their home – and what’s on the other side is a new housing development.

Changing Perspectives Projection Trail
Saturday 20th October, 6-10pm
Westside Plaza and surrounding areas
Join us on Saturday night for the festival climax with an outdoor projection mapping trail at Westside Plaza brought to you by Double Take Projections. Local spaces will appear like never before, as we illuminate the Wester Hailes Library, Odeon cinema and underpasses with short films and moving images.
On the building surface of the Wester Hailes Library you will see footage from the WHALE VHS Archive; whilst a new animation inspired by the Sentinel newspaper, created by artists Morwenna Kearsley and Bernie Reid, will be projected on to the Odeon cinema. Lastly explore the local underpasses for light installations and a musical and text installation of community song ‘Let’s Meet at the Underpass’ at the railway underpass near the Healthy Living Centre.
Pick up a map from WHALE Arts and just explore, suitable for all ages.
Changing Perspectives Festival Hub

Visiting the Projection Trail? Why not pop into WHALE Arts to find out more about the event with the WHALE Community Cinema and warm yourself up with some tasty autumnal treats from Tasting Change. Also at this event see an experimental film piece showcasing the highlights of WHALE and Tasting Change by film maker Ollie Benton and join us for a family friendly disco in memory of World Disco Soup Day earlier this year.
